Through gaining knowledge of Spanish, we aim to enable pupils to have a gateway into another cultures and language learning. We aim to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. We will teach Spanish in KS2 which will enable pupils to develop their speaking and listening skills, giving them the opportunity to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers. Through practical examples, we hope to enable them to use, develop and communicate their knowledge of languages. The scheme of work is progressive with a focus of accessing the long term memory using repetition, revision and application in a variety of ways. It will enable pupils to understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources. Speaking will be a key component of lessons to promote personal aspirations, ensuring pupils gain enjoyment, pride and a sense of achievement as their long term memory schemas expand. They will learn to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation. To support this, we will ensure Spanish is used daily within the classroom and around school (answering the register, asking for a drink/the toilet and having signs up around school). We will also encourage pupils to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt. At Pathways we also believe that early exposure to languages is key and so encourage the language learning process from FS2. Spanish in FS2 and KS1 focuses on introducing children to the spoken language with a kinesthetic and tactile approach throughout.
